Does Oryx buy mixed material?
No, Oryx does not buy mixed materials. We sell large volumes directly to the major stainless steel producers. Because of the large volumes we buy and process we can only buy clean material that is already segregated.
What are the maximum allowed dimension and weight of scrap?
Oryx sells directly to the major stainless steel producers. The producers have very specific requirements when it comes to the maximum size and weight of the stainless steel. The main reason for this is the size of the furnace and ability to handle material. Big and heavy pieces can furthermore damage the inside of the furnace. Therefore, we only allow a maximum size of 1 meter x 1 meter and maximum weight of 500kg. If the material is larger and heavier, we will ask the supplier to cut it to the required size. Alternatively, Oryx also has the capability to cut the material to the required dimensions. Our experienced traders can further explain about the requirements.
What is 304 solids with tin (Sn) lining?
For some applications tin (Sn) is used to weld stainless steel. Tin can be found especially in cooking equipment and cooling devices. Tin is a very soft metal and can absolutely not be mixed with stainless steel scrap for the production of new virgin stainless steel. Manufacturers will issue very big penalties or even reject the material in case Sn is found. Oryx does not buy stainless steel scrap with Sn attached. In case we find small quantity during our rigorous quality inspection we will separate it. As we can’t use it for our production, we have to process stainless steel with Sn in a different and very costly way. We will therefore always claim this cost from the supplier. Our experienced traders can explain how to recognize Sn lining attached to stainless steel scrap.
What is the difference between 304 Cu and 302?
Basically 304Cu (copper) and 302 are the same material but with a different name. It reverts to 304 stainless steels with a high Cu content. Typically, 304Cu or 302 starts at a Cu content of min 1.5%. 304Cu or 302 is used for the production of fasteners (bolds, screws and studs).
Why is the price between 304 and 301 different?
The price for 304 and 301 is determined based on the Nickel (Ni) and Chrome (Cr) content in the material. Ni is the most expensive element followed by Cr. 304 typically has a Ni content of 8% and Cr content of 17.5%. 301 has Ni content of average 6.5% and Cr content of 16%. To calculate the price of the Ni content in the material we use the Ni price of the London Metal Exchange (LME). For the Cr calculation there is a Cr benchmark.
Why do 400 series material have different prices?
The price of 400 series is mainly based on the Chrome (Cr) content in the material. The most common types of chromes steel are 409/410 with 10%-13% Cr content and 430 with 15% Cr content. Sometimes there is an offer in the market for 400 series. In general, this means that it is mix of different kinds of chrome steel with a different Cr content. To determine a price for this mix it is important to do a good sampling to get the average Cr content.
How can I test the grade of stainless steel?
There are many different ways to test the grade of stainless steel. Off course you can use professional testing equipment. These are very accurate but also very expensive so maybe only worthwhile when you turn over bigger quantities. There are less expensive methods like the spark test where you use a grinder to test if material is ferrous or non-ferrous. When it sparks it is ferrous (carbon steel, stainless steel, cast iron etc.) and no spark non-ferrous (aluminum, copper, lead, zinc and tin). Once you have determined which material is ferrous and which is non-ferrous you can use a magnet to segregate the chrome steel from the other ferrous. To further distinguish between grades 304 and 316 you can use acid testing. When using the acid test 304 will show green crystals and a dark surface where 316 shows a brown surface. It is also possible to send a sample or let us do an inspection on your yard to determine the grade. Our experienced traders can further explain how to determine the different grades of stainless steel.
How does Oryx check the quality of the material?
Oryx has a rigorous quality management process in place. When material arrives, we will first weight it on our weight bridge. At the same time, the radiation gates on the weight bridge will check for any radiological contamination. Our material handling cranes also have detectors in the grapple that constantly checks the material for radiological contamination while it is being handled. After weighting, the material will be off loaded and inspected by our experienced quality officers. They will conduct a visual inspection to see if there are no impurities or contamination in the material like wood, dust, water, oil, plastic, tin lining, copper or any other non-metallic, non-ferrous material. They will use a magnet to further check for ferrous and non-ferrous material. The quality officer uses a Niton to determine the analysis of the material. The officer will randomly take a number of Niton shots of the material to establish if the material meets the contractually agreed specifications. We will also take samples from the material which we will melt. After melting the samples will be analyzed in our laboratory to get a more accurate analysis. Our quality management process is completely transparent and suppliers are invited to witness the whole process.
Do I have to bring the material to Oryx or can Oryx also collect it?
Yes in general we expect our suppliers to deliver the material to our yard. However for special projects we can also arrange to pick up the material at your facility. Our experienced traders can explain how it works.
What do I do when I have a question?
